Just before Christmas I went to the Post Office near my flat, then got on the bus into town. It was only when I got off the bus I realised that my hat was missing. I'm usually careful with my hats and gloves, but somewhere I had misplaced it.
This hat was one I knit last year to a pattern I made up myself, though for some reason I had never blogged about it. I loved it because it was a beret made exactly to my specifications, with just the right fit in the ribbing.
I made my husband walk the route from flat to post office, called the Post Office to see if I had left it there and called the bus company lost property to report it. All to no avail. It would look like an unremarkable hat to anyone else, but it was my favourite and I was kicking myself for being so careless with it.
I did scribble the pattern down somewhere, so when I eventually find my notes I will try to knit it again. At least I do have the skills to make it again, so I suppose I should count myself lucky.
Farewell beloved beret!
Have you ever lost something you made and loved?

Oh no, how horrible. :( I've lost plenty of clothes - jackets in particular, from doing contract work and leaving them on a coat stand at one workplace when leaving for the next. And of course, I only realise weeks or months later. So annoying!
ReplyDeleteI am sure that you will recreate it perfectly though :)
:-( this makes me sad :-( hope beret 2 lives up to her older sister!

Oh no! I'm so sorry about your hat, it was lovely. My sister did the same thing with a hat I had knit her.
ReplyDeleteI recently lost one of my lovely owl fingerless gloves. I think I dropped it on the station platform. That evening I scoured the entire station looking for my glove, and asked every member of station staff I came across if they had seen it. I think they thought I was a bit crazy. I never found my glove...I really should make another one, but that's not the point....
ReplyDeleteThat's so sad, Kat! Those gloves were awesome!
DeleteThat's so sad. It's hard when it's something you bought must be even harder with a favourite handmade item... X
ReplyDeleteOh no! This is terrible. What a fabulous beret and I am bummed to hear that it is gone!
ReplyDeleteI'm sad for you that you lost the beret! The next one will be even better :)
ReplyDeleteSuch a sad loss. I haven't lost anything I made myself, yet, as far as I can recall; I dread the moment I will have to part with one of my makes, for whatever reason.
ReplyDeleteBut yes, at least you should be able to make it again, even if it will never be quite the same.
Oh no, how gutting! Last weekend i lost one arm warmer I only finished making at Christmas. It was my first completed knitting project ever, as I Only starting knitting in November.
ReplyDeleteOh no, how disappointing :( I once lost a beret with sequins on it (thankfully not handmade so replaceable in one sense) but I was so upset/angry at myself.
ReplyDeleteAnd it was a lovely hat - at least you've got pics and a pattern to work from :)

That really is a bummer :( I hate that feeling you get when you lose something that is special to you.
ReplyDeleteYes, I lost a handmade jacket (Sewaholic Minoru). I've given away plenty omymensingh me-makes to my best friend when I realized I didn't like or wear them, but I actually loved my Minoru and wore it all the time. So sad that all that time and effort is just wiped out!
ReplyDeleteWhoops, that's supposed to say "plenty of my me-makes." The iPhone HATES commenting on blogger blogs.
DeleteI have not 'lost' any of my makes as such, but as a child/teenager I used to make toys - cute little teddies and a house to put them in, dollies, mice, all sorts! My father was in the Army and we used to move every two - three years and after one of the moves, all these toys had disappeared. It turned out that my Mum had limited boxes to pack up our possessions and had given them to the local childcare place for Army children . . . . sigh!!! How could I be upset :)
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you lost your hat!! My son lost a crocheted noro scarf I made him and he cried! I was so surprised he had such a strong reaction. He told me he loved it. Awwwww
ReplyDeleteHow sad! I hope fate brings it back to you!
ReplyDeleteI nominated you for a blog award:

It's not a new beret, and it's not really because of your old beret, but I hope it will cheer you up a little. :-)
You have my sympathy! Two years ago I lost one mitten from a pair I had made. I loved my mittens and was so sad to have lost one of them. Just this year I re-knit a new pair to replace what I had lost.
ReplyDeleteAww man, that's such a bummer. I lost my favorite hat a few years back, too, and eventually gave in a knit another one exactly like it. We won't talk about poor hubs accidentally felting my beloved Still Light tunic... that still breaks my heart a little.
ReplyDeleteOh no! That is horrible, I hope you can find the right wool again too.
ReplyDeleteI just lost one of my favourite earrings, not me-made, but still I am pretty sure I can't replace them as they were from a boutique where she makes small runs of things :(
I also wish I had kept my old me-made stuff that would no longer fit, as it would be nice for me to see how far I have come. Unfortunately a huge culling session a few years ago has lost any chance of me ever seeing those things again.
So sorry to hear this! I feel your pain. One week, a couple of years ago, I left TWO hats on buses! One was a handmade, the other a gift from a very good friend. I didn't get either of them back. :-(
ReplyDeleteSame thing happened to me some years ago, it was a lovely hat that fit amazing. I made it without a pattern and didn't write down how many stitches I cast on, so it will be difficult to re-make that hat. I was just about to write that I don't have any pictures of it, but I just remember that I must have a picture from 2010 with the hat somewhere on my back-up hard drive.
ReplyDeleteLuckily I still have one ball of the yarn, so it should be possible to recreate the hat.
I lost a handknit sweater many months ago. Though I did what I could to get it back it never turned up. While it still makes me sad to think about I tell myself perhaps it's kept some homeless person a bit warmer this winter (I lost it in the park and there are lots of homeless people in Seattle). It may not bring my sweater back but it helped me feel a bit better about it. It was a Girl Friday with lots of mods which I mostly wrote down so I'll make another someday. My story doesn't inspire much hope but perhaps your hat will still turn up?
ReplyDeleteOh no! :( Sadly I don't wear anything I make often enough to lose it (plus they tend to be dresses!), but I've had a friend ruin a baby blanket I crocheted by putting it on a savage wash cycle and that was pretty annoying! Hope you find your pattern and manage to make another just as nice x
ReplyDeleteOh how sad. I lost my 'Lucky Hat' that I made, just before Christmas... oh the irony. I was so miserable. But then it turned up a few weeks later. So maybe it does deserve it's title. I do hope yours turns up. Check all railings and garden walls. There are a few thoughtful people in the world!
ReplyDeleteJust this morning, in fact, I realized I put my favorite knitted hat into the washer and dryer by accident. I cried a bit, but now I'm just going to have to make the darn thing again!
