A good match of dress and fabric?

Last year I bought this dress pattern on eBay:

Style 2241 from 1978

I'm always a fan of dresses with pockets, and thought it was unlike any other pattern I'd seen. However I was concerned that it might look a little like maternity wear, so hesitated to make it.

Enter this fabric (put your sunglasses on)....

A special offer £1 per metre crepe from Mandors. Yes, it is printed with neon flowers and in my view, treads that fine line between fabulous and hideous. I have 3 metres of it, which would be enough to make my preferred view (number 2) from the pattern.

What do you think - neon nightmare or electric dream?

  4. Love the fabric! You could try the gathered version and if you felt it had too much of a maternity feel you could scale it down to the non gathered version.

  7. I have this fabric too (from Croft Mill though) and I'm in two minds about it too! Saying that, I actually think it would be great for View 2 of your pattern, the drape is perfect for it too. And you can always wear a skinny belt to cinch the waist in if necessary. I love your pattern/fabric combo!

  8. I LOVE IT!! What about extending it to maxi length? The midi length on the pattern envelope is probably what makes it seem a little maternity-ish. But the fabric is fab!

    1. I think you're right, the length isn't helping. I think this pattern could be a good base for a maxi dress, which I was thinking about making, but not sure if I have enough of this fabric. But you've got me thinking that I could use it for a maxi too - thanks!

  16. You know that fabric is very narrow don't you? I think you would have to go sleeveless if you only have 3 metres. A maxi dress would be fantastic!

  17. I think that suits views 1 or 2 best. I love the print but envisioning it in view three might be a bit moomoo-ish. I agree with Roobeedoo on the maxi!
