Finished: 1970s High waisted denim skirt

I can't believe I have actually finished this skirt. It began in April 2016, with a 50p eBay pattern bargain. But I was totally foxed by the instructions for the zip insertion, and I mean totally confused. I abandoned the pattern in a huff and only forced myself to revisit it 15 months later. And guess what, I struggle to see why I was so confused. I had thought that the zip was supposed to have a fly (which it doesn't) but nonetheless was unable to follow the instructions then, which I now did with more ease. Happy days, because I loved the pattern. Unfortunately the area at the bottom of the zip was a little worse for wear due to my cutting it in the wrong place (see photo below) but it's still wearable.

Here's the lowdown:

Pattern
Butterick 5244 a pattern for a skirt or flares with a lovely pocket and waistband detail. I made the skirt

Reason for pattern choice
The big pockets and waistband tabs that fold over, and all the topstitching

Fabric & Notions
Denim was from Mandors (I think) and I used a couple of snaps at the waistband, set with my Prym vario pliers. I used some Liberty bias from my stash for the pocket binding and also at the hem, to reduce bulk from folding the denim.
Pattern alterations or any design changes
The pattern was a 28" waist but it was easy to grade it up a bit.

How was it to sew?
Ignoring the 15 month hiatus - fine! I don't think the instructions were great in general though, I ended up doing the waistband my own way and felt that the instructions for the back tab were not very clear. It used a lot of topstitching thread, I needed to get an extra spool of thread.

Would you sew it again and do anything different next time?
I would definitely sew it again. Next time I would try not to get in a huff :) It looks fab in denim with the topstitching but would look equally nice in a slightly softer fabric in a bright colour.

Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, because it's a simple skirt with lovely details.

Cost
Pattern was 50p but the fabric cost is lost in the mists of time.
Conclusion
I wish I hadn't left it so long to finish but I'm so glad I finally tackled it again because I love this skirt. It has just the right amount of flare and the details really make it.

  2. Squee things like this take me straight back to my teens when this pattern came out. I remember the fabric shops from back then too - so many beautiful denims and chambrays and small scale florals voiles. Sigh!

  3. It's such a timeless style! Your skirt looks every bit as trendy as it would have in the '70s - love the topstitching and nice big pockets! Beautiful denim skirt I'm sure you'll get loads of wear out of throughout most the year!

  5. Love big pockets always ❤️ Also very fond of this colour denim too, perfect for a 70’s vibe. I’ve lost count of the number of times I have put down a ‘difficult’ project and it’s taken 5 minutes to fix when I get back to it, if that’s any consolation!

  6. Your skirt is fab. I love that relaxed, 70's vibe and the fabric was a perfect choice. They knew how to do pockets back then. Lovely topstitching. It is so neat. Your skirt really was well worth the wait. Xx

  8. Lovely skirt and great topstitching! I put pockets like that on a self drafted skirt, and it is so hard to keep my hands out of them!

  9. Adorable! It does indeed have just the right amount of flare. I think you could easily redraft the zipper area of the pattern to make it easier to sew, though if you've done it once you've probably got it down. Now I really want you to make one with rainbow top stitching...
