This blanket was a great scrap buster. It is made from Double Knitting wool, all of which was left over from other projects, except the dark purple used for the outside border. For that, I bought 3 balls of Drops Karisma and spent about £8.
My original plan was use use my DK wool leftovers to knit a rainbow jumper, until I realised that I would look like a kids TV presenter. Apparently rainbows are having a fashion 'moment' right now, but I think I still would have looked (and felt) like an idiot if I dressed as one. The blanket was a much better move because it's the 3rd non-baby size blanket I have made but only the 1st that is actually a good size for adults to use. The others have ended up a little small but this one is ideal for lounging on the sofa.
The pattern I used was the Basic Granny Square Blanket by Sarah Hearn, available for free on Ravelry. I began in the centre by using each colour in turn until it ran out - not even completing full rounds. Once it was as wide as I wanted, I began to add equal rows on two opposite ends, as I wanted a more useful rectangular blanket instead of a square one.
Finally I finished with 4 rounds of dark purple border. That used up nearly every inch of the 150g of purple wool I had. The final border round is a slightly different pattern to give a wavy edge, and I had calculated the amount used for each round using the amount for the normal rows when the border row took a bit more wool, Happily I just made it. You can also see that it isn't a perfect rectangle, as the bits added on the ends have veered outwards. Not to worry, it won't be noticeable when it's being used.
This was a great stashbusting project and was such a fun, mindless project. I'm actually a bit sad to be finished. I'd like to challenge my crochet skills a bit by learning how to do it in 3D. Maybe one day soon.

Love it! There's nothing nicer than snuggling on the settee with a crochet blanket, and if it is in happy rainbow colours, all the better!
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda, it's perfect for snuggling under on the sofa
DeleteVery nice. I'd like to work on my crochet skills too. Nothing like a handmade blanket to chase away the chill.
ReplyDeleteYes, one day I will learn to do something more than the very basics of crochet and expand my own skills!
DeleteThis is lovely, and from the final photo it looks as though it's very popular as well!
ReplyDeleteThanks - it's being well used!
DeleteLooks great! I used to make granny squares with my scrap yarn, but for some reason crochet really buggers up my wrist in a way that knitting doesn't
ReplyDeleteAh damn, that's annoying about your wrist
DeleteIt looks brilliant, all the colours are great together!
ReplyDeleteThanks, very pleased with how it looks, quite a simple idea but worked out well
DeleteOoh I love it! You could make something like this next ;) https://www.etsy.com/listing/68662918/reserved-granny-square-vintage-sweater
ReplyDeleteHa! Crochet does seem to be a viable fashion choice again. Not for me though!
DeleteGreat blanket and the colours are lovely! I just wish I could crochet!
ReplyDeleteThanks - you could definitely crochet if you can knit. This is pretty much the simplest thing you can do but sometimes the simplest things are the best :)
