October on Vintage Pledge & Book Giveaway

Hello vintage sewing fans!

October is upon us, so it's time to find out what the month holds for the Vintage Pattern Pledge.

We will have:

  • A 1980s inspiration post from me (slightly delayed, ahem, from last month!)
  • A Pattern stash interview from Zilredloh on A Stitching Odyssey
  • The announcement of the prizes for our End of Year Competition!
The last thing is particularly exciting because Marie and I have been working with some great sponsors to put together some fantastic prizes for you. We will be letting you know exactly what they are, plus telling you how to enter. So if you've been a little tardy with your Vintage Pledge makes - do not delay! More news coming soon.

This month we have a giveaway kindly provided by our lovely monthly sponsors, Love Sewing Magazine. They have given us a copy of the Gertie Sews Vintage Casual book to give away.
She needs no introduction, but Gretchen (Gertie) Hirsh has inspired many, many people to try sewing vintage style clothes, including me. If you love vintage styles but find it hard to make them work every day, this book is for you.

The competition is open worldwide and will be open until 29th October at 5pm UK time. After then, a winner will be picked at random.

To enter, please comment below to tell me what you are looking forward to sewing this Autumn (or Spring for Southern Hemisphere entrants!) and make sure that your email address is include or is linked to your profile.

  1. Oh, I love the pattern stash interviews. They are really interesting and have great pics. I was a teenager in the (mid) 80s so hearing the 80s referred to as vintage always cracks me up. Please don't add me into the book draw. I already have tis one and have made the pencil skirt pattern a couple of times. Xx

  2. I have no "big" projects planned for autumn, but I am sewing draft dodgers for my windows to (hopefully) keep some of the chill out of my house. I am getting together with my neighbors to sew circular needle holders. We saw one at our LYS and both agreed we could sew our own with fabrics that make us happy. Please enter me in the contest.

  6. What a great giveaway!

I'm looking forward to finishing a Vintage Vogue 273, which is this lovely noir dress, perfect for a spring evening and a cocktail.

I also have lots of shorts and a new summery playsuit to work on.

    Thanks!

  7. I've got a couple of non-scary 80s patterns that I want to try myself including a *ahem* sun dress (I can wear it with a cardy!) and a jumpsuit.

Looking forward to seeing your makes!

  8. Thank you for the wonderful giveaway! The book looks amazing!
For autumn, I intend to catch up on the vintage pledge items I had planned to make but didn't get around to. I want to make a 1940s caryall bag, a 1920s evening bag and perhaps a turban or hat.
Yep, big plans! Lets hope I get there this time.....

  9. Well, I'm not doing very well with my vintage pledge - only 1 out of 4 done and that one was cheating a little! And I've just decided to make a quilt for my Mum and since it's the first quilt I will have ever made, I'm not going to get much time for my garment sewing!

However, I am planning on making a bullet bra from a 1950's French pattern before the year is out. I've already tested the pattern on some calico so it shouldn't take long to make. Plus I totally need a bullet bra in my life as I'm sure my previous vintage makes will look so much better with more appropriate underwear!

I love the pattern stash interviews, but I'm afraid the 1980's inspiration post will have me cringing, I was in my early 20's and a prolific sewer in the 80's, wearing something new to work almost every Monday!

Please enter me into the draw for the book, it's one I don't have, yet! :-D

  11. I plan to saw up a shirt dress this fall but am having a hard time deciding which pattern to use.

  12. I'm working on finishing up a few basics for my vintage wardrobe, mostly blouses and skirts. My "big" project will be a new wool coat if I can find the right fabric. :)

  14. I bought yards and yards of a chambray-ish fabric this summer; I want to sew dresses and shirts for my whole family (not to all wear at the same time, though ;-)

  18. I'm actually really excited about sewing a dress for my Halloween costume - does that count, lol? I live in Florida so it's still too hot for typical "fall" clothing here. I'm still thinking cotton all the way!

  19. So many plans! The general answer is button down shirts and jeans, but there will be some knit shirts, Christmas presents, and hopefully menswear thrown in. You know how you have a mental list a mile long and then 5 of those actually get made? ;)

  20. I will focus on cozy casual wear this autumn.

  21. Nothing big planned yet, just some lavender bags for Xmas gifts. I'm sure that could change though 😃

  22. Sewing my first actual sweater/jumper. Bought some gorgeous blue merino wool sweat-shirt fabric in NZ earlier this year, and can't wait to make a snuggly jumper!

  23. I want to make a 3/4 sleeve jacket for summer at work, a Christmas dress and a dress to wear to a November wedding.

  24. Ooo... do please count me in for this giveaway! I've currently got a Joan Dress on the go and have nearly finished a 70s shirt for the Mr and then I really must get some vintage coat plans in order. Too many good ones to choose from!

  25. Like many other people, I'm still getting used to 1980's stuff being vintage. I remember that decade and the clothes!
As for autumn sewing, I had lots of plans for lovely 1950's dresses but I'm not sure anymore. Lately my shoulders are getting wider and my hips narrower because of all the rock climbing I'm doing (because I live in a country without actual rocks, most of that is indoors, in climbing halls so it won't be limited by the changing weather). I may have to start re-thinking some of my style choice and I may just have to sew replacements for normal basic garments when they don't fit well anymore.

  31. I'm currently working on a moulage to make a custom sloper. I'm always really frustrated when it comes to fitting and I have high hopes that it will solve some issues. Then I want to sew ALL the shirt dresses!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm hoping to sew some slim winter skirts from my smaller bits of fabric. Since I don't ride my bike in the winter, I don't need the full or A-line variety.
And finish a needle-felted hat I've been working on for a couple of weeks.

  33. I'm hoping to sew m6800, (a pretty McCall's coat labeled 'easy'....) Since it will be my first coat I am going to try it in polar fleece first. I don't have the money to buy wool coating, and I think I would cry if I made a mistake while sewing with it even if I did! The polar fleece should be wearable after I'm done, and cost around $20 rather than $200.

I'm not comfortable leaving my address in a post on the off-chance my comment is picked but can drop a message to my blog if it is and everything can be sorted from there. Best of luck to everyone in their projects!
