Last month I made it to the marketplace of the In the Loop 4 Knitting Conference, at Glasgow University. Although I wasn't able to attend the conference, the marketplace was open to the public so I was able to pop in at lunchtime. As a side note, I went to part of the previous knitting conference they held and it was really cool to see people knitting while listening to the presentations!
I allowed myself to purchase one skein from the marketplace, and it was a tough choice. I went for some 4 play yarn from Ripples Crafts in the colourway Stormy Seas, a beautiful mix of rich blues and turquoise.
After a false start with a different pattern, I settled on the Noel shawl by Paulina Popiolek. This was one of the patterns suggested to me by Helen of Ripples Crafts, and is perfect for showcasing the colours in hand-dyed yarns. It requires just one skein too. So far I'm enjoying the knit. It's a 4 row repeat for the first part with the picot edge, and then onto the lace section. I'm a bit nervous about knitting lace across long rows because it takes longer to spot any mistakes, which often aren't evident until a few rows on. Hopefully this won't be a problem though and it won't be too long before I can share a finished product with you

DeleteWhen you get to the lace section, put in markers between the pattern repeats (or every so many stitches, like every 20 stitches). That should help you spot a mistake. Another trick is to put in a 'life line' every ten rows or so incase you need to rip back.
ReplyDeleteThank you Karen. When I looked at the pattern again, it's really only rows of eyelets rather than lace, so I only need to do one row of yo,k2tog repeated and the rest is knit, so that's much less intimidating. I have never tried life lines, really need to look into those
