My Favourite Vintage Homewear Find

Last month I made my favourite ever homewear find - a pair of gorgeous 1950s barkcloth curtains. I spotted them in the vintage section of a charity shop in town, and knew immediately that they had to be mine. A bargain at £14.99.

They are in excellent condition, and after a wash to freshen them up, I put on a new curtain tape and let down the generous hem to make them the right length to use as floor-to-ceiling curtains in the bedroom.

Here's a close up of the pattern:

I would have loved to have used them in the living room but sadly they were a bit narrow. There's no maker or pattern name on them which is a shame, as I love to find out more about the things I buy. Nevertheless, I am utterly delighted with my find.

Have you made any good finds recently?

  1. In keeping with my current fascination with all things Japanese - a lovely bamboo fan with an intricate punched pattern. We spotted it in the window of Oxfam in Richmond (N Yorks not W London) - a snip at 99p!

  5. Excellent find! I've some retro curtains I bought on eBay that came my way after patiently looking for the right colours. It's so satisfying seeing them hanging so I kind of know what you mean!

  6. I was given recently two damask bedspreads, a silk kimono and a gorgeous late 80s women's jacket, which my husband is seen wearing on my latest blogpost to a Big Fat Gypsy Wedding party! Wonderful finds gifted to me by the sound technician of the show I recently costumed who is downsizing.

  7. Lovely curtains, what a great find! My most recent acquisition from a charity shop is a pretty little square scent bottle with a silver coloured screw cap. Don't think it's silver as I can't find a hall mark and the glass has a chip here and there but for £3 it cheered me up no end!

  8. Great find! Those curtains are awesome. In fact, I'm a bit jealous. :)

My latest vintage finds are a couple of '60s sweaters (which I'm going to post about soon) and a 1960 shirt/jacket with peter pan collar.

Hope you had a lovely weekend!

  9. Excellent find! Love the print. A while ago I grabbed a cashmere sweater for four dollars in a thrift store and dyed it a deeper green and replaced the buttons. It's a bit of work, but four dollars for cashmere? Amazing!

  13. They're beautiful! I see curtains in fabrics like this often when out thrifting and always wish they were lighter weight so I could sew them into clothes. Perhaps I should just... use them for what they were designed for! Our current curtains are awful! My latest thrifty finds are posted at my blog - I hit the vintage fabric yardage motherload :D
