Finished: 1970s High waisted denim skirt
Here's the lowdown:
Butterick 5244 a pattern for a skirt or flares with a lovely pocket and waistband detail. I made the skirt
The big pockets and waistband tabs that fold over, and all the topstitching
Fabric & Notions
Denim was from Mandors (I think) and I used a couple of snaps at the waistband, set with my Prym vario pliers. I used some Liberty bias from my stash for the pocket binding and also at the hem, to reduce bulk from folding the denim.
The pattern was a 28" waist but it was easy to grade it up a bit.
How was it to sew?
Ignoring the 15 month hiatus - fine! I don't think the instructions were great in general though, I ended up doing the waistband my own way and felt that the instructions for the back tab were not very clear. It used a lot of topstitching thread, I needed to get an extra spool of thread.
Would you sew it again and do anything different next time?
I would definitely sew it again. Next time I would try not to get in a huff :) It looks fab in denim with the topstitching but would look equally nice in a slightly softer fabric in a bright colour.
Would you recommend it to others?
Yes, because it's a simple skirt with lovely details.
Pattern was 50p but the fabric cost is lost in the mists of time.
I wish I hadn't left it so long to finish but I'm so glad I finally tackled it again because I love this skirt. It has just the right amount of flare and the details really make it.
p.s. Thanks for all the comments on my last post - very much appreciated x
