One Room Down...

When I posted a couple of months ago about having moved house and feeling a bit overwhelmed, lots of people left really lovely and supportive comments. I am hugely appreciative of this, it was really helpful to feel that other people had done the same thing and survived - thank you to everyone who commented. Now we're over half a year in, things are starting to feel less daunting and more manageable. So, I thought I would share the one room of the house that we have so far redecorated, Miss Kestrel's bedroom.

Here are some 'before' pictures:

It was a bit of a pink and purple mess, with really badly painted edges. There were a couple of different types (ages) of plug socket and the coving had a gap in it.

First step was stripping old wallpaper, which had been painted over many times and was pretty stubborn - followed by lots of filling and sanding.

We ended up getting the room rewired and put up new coving too and all the woodwork was painted a nice gloss white
After watching a few Youtube videos and gathering our supplies, we tackled wallpapering for the first time ever! The lining paper was a good practice:
I'd bought this animal wallpaper before we even moved in, and I think we did a really good job of putting it up. Though the wallpapering in the rest of the house looks like it was done by a drunk man with one arm, so it wouldn't be hard to beat that.
Of course, the room has some handmade touches. the main one is the curtains, made from a charity shopped duvet cover. Once we'd committed to that wallpaper, it was pretty hard to choose a curtain colour. I suppose we could have gone for plain (but really, what sewist gets excited about plain fabric?) but it was good to be able to use something already in my stash:
One side was patterned and the other plain. Here's my first attempt....whoops! I did manage to get it evened out later though,
These cushion covers were made with a half metre of Aneela Hoey fabric I bought ages ago, just because I liked it. They were backed with some lovely soft scrap needlecord.

There's room for a couple of handmade friends and the cloud wall hanging I made when Miss Kestrel was a baby:

I'm really pleased with the picture wall
And there's even a play tent

The room is lovely and cosy and it's great for Miss Kestrel to have such a nice place to play. We all enjoy hanging out in there.
There are still a few finishing touches (like hemming the curtains properly) but it's basically done and it feel great!

This is how it mostly looks - I think she's trying to do headstands!

  4. What a transformation!! I love that wallpaper, and your curtain fabric. It's also so nice to see photos of a toddlers room that look normal i.e. toys and books everywhere! Your picture wall looks great too.

    1. Yep it's quite often a mess although I do make more of an effort to keep it tidy than most other rooms because I'm so pleased with how it looks

    1. I love those Aneela Hoey prints, I have another similar one too but struggle to know what to make with them, because I'm not much of a quilter

  7. It's a lovely room. You did a great job with the wallpaper. I think decorating is horrible to do, but at least the effects last a long time!

    1. Yes it took way longer than we thought/hoped - we thought it would be a couple of weeks but because of the re-wiring and things it took way longer. So hopefully she's happy with it for a long time!

    1. Haha, probably not the easiest!Putting up wallpaper also makes you realise how often walls and ceilings are slightly squint too

  9. Fab job!!! And to do it so thoroughly too, not just slapping over what was there. Loving the wallpaper and the soft blue and the reused fabric curtains, they are super special

    1. Thank you! I definitely wanted to stay away from super girly but it probably helps that there is a lot of blue in Frozen - that unavoidable phenomenon!

  11. It looks amazing! We are about to do our one and only wallpapered wall in our house, hopefully it looks as good as yours once done ( not nearly as fab wallpaper as yours though).

    1. Good luck with your wallpapering - I think one simple one wall in a room is enough for us too, would hate the challenge of having to wallpaper around windows or awkwardly shaped things

  12. What a fabulous make-over. I love the wallpaper in Miss Kestrel's room and that is such a soothing shade of blue. What a great recycling job with the curtains. I am feeling your pain with the decorating. I am supposed to be doing my dining room today and am sat reading sewing blogs instead. Fair swap I think. Xx

    1. Yeah, it's such a thought to have to get in to decorating. we have so much wallpaper to remove in this house, I'm a little worried about the horrors that lurk beneath...!
