Cute mini machine from The Stitchery
One of the best things about having a sewing blog is that it allows you to connect with people who love what you love. Social media allows you to have conversations about your passion on a daily basis, but there's nothing like meeting up in real life.
On Saturday I met up with 9 sewing ladies at The Stitchery in Glasgow. I hadn't been before, but it is a lovely space with two large rooms available. One was perfect for 10 of us to sit and sew and the other had room for cutting and trying on, with overlockers available.
Here's what I was working on:
A New Look Maudella skirt, the view on the left with slash pockets. I made it up in a dark denim, which is pictured here but this is a terrible photo so it gives no idea of what the fabric is actually like.
Photo by Franca of Oranges & Apples - showing the swap table and me trying on a partly-sewn skirt.
I didn't finish it on the day - we had four hours but there was a lot of chatting which also led to some mistakes (I can't be the only one who found this!) but it was all part of the fun of getting to sew with others. I finished it up over the weekend and am absolutely loving the result so will be making at least one more. Well, I actually have two more planned. I will try and get photos soon, when I can get the magical combination of time, good light, a clean and non-creased garment and co-operating photo face.
Might take a while then...
It was such a lovely afternoon of stitching - thanks to all the ladies who came along ; Katy C, Katy S, Jen (no blog -yet!), Hazel, Elaine, Alison, Amy, Franca, Vanessa.

Sounds like Heaven! Sewing can be such a solitary hobby. Lovely skirt, always think of denim as a neutral it is so versatile. Didn't know The Stitchery is there. Xx
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to spend an afternoon!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! It's really, really nice to sew with other people, isn't it? Sometimes I don't realize how lonely I get working away all by myself (especially now that I'm mostly working from home). I'm glad you have such a nice sewing community in Glasgow!
ReplyDeleteSounds like such a fun afternoon! I've never attended a sewing party like this, but hopefully I'll have opportunity one day. I totally agree about making mistakes in a group setting. I used to attend a knitting group and always had to unpick whatever I had knit during the group time, oh well! It's worth it for the fun. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for organising it, it was a really fun day! Look forward to seeing your finished skirt, I am also waiting for that elusive moment to take a photo of mine :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like you all had a lovely day. I'm gutted I missed it. Hopefully we can do it again another time?
ReplyDeleteI love the mini sewing machine!! My friend bought me one from a market with the challenge of getting it working but I haven't managed so far. Will need to pop in and take a look at this one next time I'm back home.
ReplyDeleteLovely denim skirt, such a useful garment!
you are so right. I went along to the first london sew weekly meet up a few years ago. it was so much fun.
ReplyDeleteIt was a really great place to meet up and do some sewing! Thanks for organising it Kerry!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like such a fun day! Sounds like a great studio space too. A whole day of sewing & chatting about sewing - what bliss!
ReplyDeleteIt was lovely to see you again, thanks for setting it up for us :o)
ReplyDeleteSewing with friends is really fun! It's fantastic that there is a shop nearby for you to gather in. The skirt looks like it's going to be wonderful!
