Knitting for Victory - My Project

I really hadn't intended to get involved with this knitalong. But you know what happens when you start reading blogs and get ideas in your head? That's just what happened here.

It was when Marie of A Stitching Odyssey mentioned that she was going to restart an abandoned 1940s sweater in spite of having loads of other things to do that I thought maybe I could find a bit of time to join in with the knitalong too.

If you're a knitter who loves vintage styles, chances are you'll know about the Knit for Victory knitalong being hosted by By Gum By Golly. The brief is that your project should have a 1940s feel - it can be any type of item and can even include a garment you've already started, provided it is under 50% knitted already. The timescale is also generous, running from November until January 31st 2014.

Although I am currently trying to concentrate on finishing my Deco cardigan, I enjoy taking part in group projects like this as it's always nice to see what everyone makes under the one theme. As per my post about my upcoming plans,  I'm using both a pattern and yarn from my stash to make something I actually need.

My pattern is from this 1940s booklet, Fair Isles for All by Stitchcraft:

Although I've been selling a few items from my vintage knitting pattern collection here, I've held on to a few patterns and booklets that I couldn't bear to part with because they were so lovely.

My project is not the amazing cover sweater (I'd like to have some sanity left when I've finished knitting), but this sweet pair of gloves:

I've never tried making gloves before although I have made a pair of 1940s style mittens before, and they get regular wear each winter.

  

Here's the yarn I'm using:

The grey is the base with the central design picked out in the AMAZING ultraviolet yarn - I promise, the photo just doesn't do justice to the intense and vibrant colour. I actually purchased it about 2 years ago and then bought the grey, intending them to be a beret. I never got around to making one but as I could actually use a pair of gloves, I think this could be just the project.

I'll also use one of the other three colours (deep blue, light green or light blue) for two of the other colours in the design so that my gloves use only 3 colours instead of 4. I'm veering towards the green but let me know what you think.

Or how do you think it would look to knit the main colour as the gorgeous ultraviolet with the rosette design in grey instead of the other way around? The mainly grey would be more traditional but the mainly purple would be really striking.

I'd love to know your thoughts!
